Tax Collector Activity

The Louisiana Constitution authorizes the Sheriff to serve as the ex-officio tax collector of Jefferson Parish. The JPSO Bureau of Revenue and Taxation is tasked with this duty and responsibility. Currently, the Bureau is responsible for collecting and disbursing over $800 million annually in local taxes, licenses, fines, and fees. Collections are made in person, by mail, and online.

All collections are distributed to the various tax imposing bodies and/or authorized recipients no later than the 10th business day of the month following the month of collections as provided for in law. Distribution reports are provided detailing the monthly collection activity.

An agency fund method is utilized to account for all collections held on behalf of others by the Sheriff and designated for eventual transfer.   This method ensures separation and division from all other operating funds of JPSO.

Tax Collector Funds

The Tax Collector fund is separated into five individual funds. Each fund is self-explanatory:

  • Criminal cash bonds
  • Fines and fees
  • Miscellaneous fees
  • Property taxes
  • Sales taxes
