MURDER INVESTIGATION IN MARRERO
Wednesday, February 13, 2013 04:33 PM
Sheriff Newell Normand reports, this morning around 11:01 AM, our 911 Center received a call from a female identified as Lakeshia Brown of 2061 Rue Racine in Marrero reporting her son dead at that address. First responding officers met with Ms. Brown who advised she discovered her 3 year-old son not breathing just prior to calling 911. Upon discovering the front door locked from the outside, Brown claimed she crawled out of a bedroom window to meet Third District officers who began arriving moments after the call was dispatched.
Our officers had to crawl through the same front bedroom window to gain entry into Brown’s home due to the front door being secured by an iron gate. Once inside of the home officers located the lifeless body of Desmond Brown laying on the sofa in the living room. He was pronounced dead on the scene. First responders noted a strong presence of gasoline fumes permeating throughout the home, as well as two containers of what appeared to be gasoline resting against Ms. Brown’s home. The JP fire department was dispatched to the scene, along with JPFD Arson Investigators. It is unknown at this time whether or not the gasoline had any correlation to the gasoline fumes in the home.
Homicide investigators spoke with Lakeshia Brown who told them she discovered her son shortly before 11:00 AM today. He was lying on the floor of her home partially covered with clothes she was preparing to wash. Brown also stated it wasn’t until she began collecting the clothing when she discovered her son’s body. She told investigators she picked the child up from the floor and placed him on the sofa, and upon realizing he was not breathing, immediately called 911. Lakeshia Brown was transported to the Investigations Bureau for further questioning.
Once the residence was deemed safe to enter, Homicide Detectives along with JP Coroner’s investigator Elizabeth Klein conducted a preliminary examination on Desmond Brown’s body which did show minor injuries, however, nothing to indicate his injuries were the cause of his death. An autopsy will be performed by the JP Coroner’s Office in order to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone with information in this matter is asked to contact our Homicide Division at 504-364-5300 or Crimestoppers.
