On January 5, 2013, the owner of Las Villas Grocery, at 3601 Division Street in Metairie was robbed. Initial reports indicated the victim was working inside of the store when an unknown black male, 5’10”-6”00” tall, 170-200 pounds, entered the business wearing a dark colored hooded jacket with a fur type collar, black bandana covering his face, black gloves on his hands, dark pants while armed with a black semi-automatic handgun in his left hand. The suspect pointed the weapon at victim and demanded money from him; while at same time, pistol whipping him on the right side of his face. The victim complied and surrendered a “bank” bag with an undisclosed amount of US Currency. The suspect demanded additional money, at which time he reached into the cash register and removed additional US Currency. The suspect fled from the business and was seen getting into a small, four door, hatch style, blue colored vehicle being driven by a second unknown B/M suspect. The robbery was captured on the store’s video surveillance camera.
In a follow-up investigation conducted by Robbery Squad Detective Wayne Rumore it was discovered that an armed robbery occurred the following day, on January 6, 2013 at the business of Stop N Go, at 4345 Williams Boulevard in Kenner. Rumore was informed by KPD investigators that a black male suspect entered the business, armed with a black semi-automatic handgun, which he held in his left hand. He was wearing a dark colored jacket with a fur style hood, black bandana covering his face, black gloves on his hands, dark colored pants and carrying a blue colored bag. The suspect demanded money from the store clerk who complied. The suspect fled and was seen getting into the passenger side of a black, four door, 2003 Nissan Murano SUV. Kenner Police stopped this vehicle in the 2600 block of Georgia Street. A black male passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. The driver, identified as Jonathan Butler, B/M, 23 was arrested. Please contact the KPD for details regarding the traffic stop, and the actions of the KPD in their investigation.
After reviewing the surveillance video of both the Las Villas Grocery store and the Stop N Go robberies, Detective Rumore noted striking similarities in the descriptions, items of clothing and actions of the armed suspect in both incidents. Rumore concluded the robberies were committed by the same suspect.
As KPD detectives continued their investigation in the Stop N Go robbery, information was developed and shared with Detective Rumore on the identity of a second suspect in the Stop N Go robbery. Arrest warrants were issued for Roderic Lathers, B/M, 19, who was subsequently arrested January 09, 2013 in Kenner. Detective Rumore, working in concert with KPD Detective Shaun Watson also learned that items seized during the search of Lathers’ home netted items he believed were associated with the robbery of the Las Villas Grocery.
Detectives Rumore, Watson and JPSO Robbery Sergeant Kevin Balser interviewed Roderic Lathers relative to the Las Villas Grocery and the Stop N Go robberies. Lathers confessed to being the gunman in both incidents, an identified Jonathan Butler as the getaway driver in both robberies. Based on this information, Detective Rumore issued arrest warrants for both Lathers and Butler charging them with one count each of Armed Robbery. Lathers will be booked with Armed Robbery upon his transfer from the KPD Jail. Butler will be booked with Armed Robbery upon his release as well to the JPCC.
