Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces the arrest of Shantel Wagner, 35, of Waggaman, for one count of Second Degree Murder in the death of former JPSO Sergeant Troy Smith. Wagner was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center earlier tonight.
At approximately 11:25 p.m. on June 17, 2018, JPSO deputies responded to the couple's residence on Camellia Lane in Waggaman. Wagner called 911 and stated that her husband had attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head. Deputies located Sgt. Smith in a bedroom at the location suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head. Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injury.
Through a combination of interviews and forensic evidence processing, probable cause was established that Smith's injury was not self-inflicted. Homicide investigators identified Wagner as a suspect in Smith's death and secured a warrant for her arrest. She was located at a residence in the 4900 block of Jean Lafitte earlier this morning and was arrested without incident.
A photograph of Wagner will be forwarded when it becomes available.
