Our July "Profile in Blue" features Dr. James Arey, known around the department as "Doc". Dr. Arey was recently promoted to be the Director of Training, and is now responsible for operations at our Training Academy and Range. Dr. Arey is also the Team Leader of our Crisis Negotiation Team.
Dr. Arey earned his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Florida State University after finishing his undergraduate work here at Tulane University. A Vietnam Veteran, Dr. Arey also served 20 years with the New Orleans Police Department before starting with the Sheriff's Office a few years ago. While with NOPD, Dr. Arey served as the commander of their Crisis Negotiation Team and at one point, the supervisor of their Mobile Crisis Unit.
In addition to his being responsible for the training efforts here, Dr. Arey is often asked to provide training through other agencies and organizations. He has at times travelled around the country providing training on topics ranging from hostage negotiation to crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
