Sheriff Newell Normand reports, on Saturday, July 8, 2017, around 5:30pm, Michael Coffee, W/M, 47, of 3300 Airline Drive in Metairie and Javaris Green, B/M, 34, of 1712 South Causeway Blvd from Metairie were at the Buffalo Billiards bar, located at 3624 Airline Drive, in Metairie. While there, Coffee and Green, who were not associated, had a verbal exchange while inside of the bar. Green struck Coffee in the face with two rapid punches, rendering him unconscious. According to witnesses, Coffee was carried from the bar by friends and upon regaining conscious, he was relocated to the Aloha Motel where he had been renting a room for several weeks. Coffee appeared to have fully recovered from the punches he sustained at the bar.
On Sunday around 12:41 PM, a friend discovered Coffee unconscious on the bathroom floor of his motel room. Coffee was transported by ambulance to University Hospital where he remained unconscious, despite treatment. On Monday, July 10, 2017, Homicide Detective Anthony Buttone was apprised of the facts and circumstances surrounding Coffee's condition. UMC hospital staff diagnosed Coffee with a massive head injuries. During the early evening hours on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, Michael Coffee was pronounced dead at University Hospital. An autopsy conducted on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, confirmed Michael Coffee died as a result of massive head trauma.
Detective Buttone located witnesses who confirmed the bar fight took place between Coffee and Green. He was also provided with Javaris Green's identity. Upon reviewing the bar's video surveillance, Det. Buttone observed the verbal exchange between Coffee and Green. The video also captured Green punching Coffee in the face.
On July 12, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued for Javaris Green for Manslaughter. On Wednesday, July 12, 2017, Green was located and arrested at his residence without incident. Green told Det. Buttone that he and Coffee had a verbal exchange while inside of the bar. He further admitting punching Coffee twice in the face. As a result, Javaris Green was transported to the JPCC and booked with one count of Manslaughter. Green was also booked on a pre-existing warrant from South Carolina for Forced Entry/Burglary.
Javaris Green has a prior criminal history with arrests for: Felony Drug Conviction, multiple crimes of violence along with weapons and narcotics offenses.
